In the tenth month of 1331 (the third year of the Gentoku Period/the first year of the Genko Period), Nikko Shonin conducted a memorial service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Daishonin’s passing. In the 11th month of the following year, he bestowed a “Tetsugi” Gohonzon upon Nichimoku Shonin, which signified the passing of the water of the Law from the master to his heir. That Gohonzon contains the inscription: “I confer this upon Kyo Ajari Nichimoku, the first to remonstrate with the Imperial Court. He is foremost among all of my disciples.” On the tenth day of the same month, Nikko Shonin composed “Articles to be Observed after Nikko’s Death” (“Nikko ato jojo no koto”), in which he entrusted the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching to Nichimoku Shonin and appointed him Master of the Seat of the Law.

On the 13th day of the first month of 1333 (the third year of the Genko Period and the second year of the Shokyo Period), Nikko Shonin prepared for Nichimoku Shonin and the members of the priesthood “The Twenty-six Admonitions,” which outlines the vital doctrines, articles of faith, rituals (formalities), warnings and other matters to be observed in perpetuity with regard to the Daishonin’s Buddhism. Then, on the seventh day of the second month, 1333, Nikko Shonin passed away at the age of 88.
