The history of Nichiren Shoshu began on the twenty-eighth day of the fourth month, 1253 (the fifth year of the Kencho Period), when Nichiren Daishonin established Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo as the foundation of this sect.

Nichiren Daishonin endured persecution on many occasions for propagating Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, the essence of the Lotus Sutra. Even so, he fulfilled the true purpose for his advent by inscribing the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching on the 12th day of the tenth month, 1279 (the second year of the Koan Period). The Daishonin’s six most senior disciples were Nissho, Nichiro, Nikko, Niko, Nitcho and Nichiji. In 1282 (the fifth year of the Koan Period), the Daishonin chose Nikko from among the six to serve as second High Priest and heir to the Heritage of the Living Essence of the Law. After formally transferring the Dai-Gohonzon and the entirety of his Buddhism to Nikko Shonin, the Daishonin passed away on the 13th day of the tenth month, 1282, at the age of 61.

Although Nikko Shonin initially lived in Minobu as the Daishonin’s successor, Hagiri Sanenaga, the feudal lord of Minobu, began committing acts that went against the Daishonin’s teachings. Therefore, in the spring of 1289 (the second year of the Sho’o Period), Nikko Shonin took the Dai-Gohonzon, together with the Daishonin’s remains and writings, and at the invitation of Nanjo Tokimitsu, headed with his disciples to Ueno, in the Fuji District of Suruga Province. There, in keeping with the Daishonin’s last will, Nikko Shonin established Taisekiji at the foot of Mount Fuji to serve as the sacred home for the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching.

For more than 700 years since then, Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism has been correctly transferred from one High Priest to the next at Taisekiji, the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu. That transfer is made through the face to face transmission of the Heritage of the Living Essence of the Law to a single heir, which is similar to the way in which water is transferred from one vessel to another.
