After T’ien-t’ai’s death, a disciple called Chang-an (561-632), whose given name was Kuan-ting, focused single-mindedly on strengthening and developing the Buddhist order, thereby laying the foundation for the T’ien-t’ai (Tendai) sect. It was this same Chang-an who wrote down T’ien-t’ai’s lectures, organized them into three major works on the Lotus Sutra – Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra (Hokke mongu), Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra (Hokke gengi), and Great Concentration and Insight (Maka shikan) – and left them for future generations.
