The following are the correct doctrines preserved by Nikko Shonin:

1)      Nikko Shonin recognized Nichiren Daishonin as the True Buddha for the Latter Day of the Law, and referred to himself in all of his writings as the Daishonin’s disciple.

2)      In keeping with the spirit of the Rissho ankoku-ron, Nikko Shonin declared that visiting Shinto shrines constitutes slander of the true Law.

3)      Nikko Shonin considered all of the Daishonin’s writings sacred treasures, whether they were written in classical Chinese or the simpler Japanese kana syllabary.

4)      Nikko Shonin admonished against the practice of reciting the entire 28 chapters of the Lotus Sutra, and instead established the chanting of Daimoku as the correct practice for the Latter Day of the Law.

5)      Nikko Shonin revered the supreme mandala inscribed by Nichiren Daishonin as the correct object of worship.

6)      Based on the Daishonin’s Buddhism, Nikko Shonin employed the single great precept of the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra.

7)      Nikko Shonin stressed the importance of the purity of the Heritage of the Law, and declared that the Daishonin’s soul refused to abide at Minobu because Minobu had turned away from his Buddhism.

8)      Nikko Shonin supported the Daishonin’s view that Mt. Fuji is the finest place on earth, and the only place worthy of serving as the center for the Daishonin’s great aspiration for kosen-rufu.

In contrast, the following are the erroneous ideas espoused by the other five senior priests:

1)      The five elders considered the Daishonin’s Buddhism an offshoot of the Tendai sect, and labeled themselves priests of the Tendai sect in all of their documents.

2)      The five elders visited Shinto shrines, including those at Ise, Izu, Hakone and Kumano.

3)      The five elders minimized the importance of the Daishonin’s Gosho written in the Japanese kana syllabary, and either burned them or recycled the paper on which they had been written.

4)      The five elders believed that the theoretical and essential teachings were equal and practiced sutra copying, which was a practice left over from the Middle Day of the Law.

5)      The five elders condoned the making and worship of statues of Shakyamuni Buddha.

6)      The five elders used the ordination platform at Mt. Hiei, which is based on precepts from the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra.

7)      The five elders revered the Daishonin’s grave at Minobu but never visited Nikko Shonin’s grave.

8)      The five elders considered Mt. Fuji a hick backwater.
